In the end of the world, in the world of death, only silence remained. Some might call that quietness peace, but in reality it was a numb, soundless silence. We worked there. Each holding a sickle. Each with a blank expression on their face.

The name 'Death God' sounded grandiose. Because it deals with death, not everyone is meant to be cool and dignified. To be precise, we were like office workers obsessed with performance. The list comes down, and the scythe is raised; it was over when I finished my life and came back. But I moved a little differently. The scythe was rusty, and the hand was always hesitant. My colleagues called me 'a reaper who doesn't seem like a reaper.' Maybe that was right. I was neither a very proud nor a very practical person.

A few days ago, a mother of one child put her name on my list. The child's father died several years ago, and the remaining two lived in a small, quiet house. I went up to the threshold of the house. And then it stopped. Because I saw the child. The child was small, had a bright smile, and was holding a toy in its hand.

When I carefully opened my eyes, the truck was belching smoke after crashing into the guardrail, and she lay quietly on the road. The cat jumped out from her arms. The sign was gone. She had the last laugh. Like someone who has gained something, as if someone understood something.

At that moment, I thought: the reason she's on the list is for me. The heart that helps someone may eventually save someone's life as well. I wonder if that's what he wanted to talk about. My scythe was rusty, for that moment only it had a quiet light. And that light at the border between this world and the other world felt like it was embracing me warmly for a moment.
