Red Velvet is a dynamic five-member girl group hailing from SM Entertainment. They burst onto the K-pop scene with their debut single, "Happiness", in August 2014, initially as a four-member group. Yeri later joined during promotions for "Ice Cream Cake" in 2015, completing the lineup. The group's name, Red Velvet, embodies their unique concept which encompasses two distinct personas - "Red" for their vibrant and bold image, and "Velvet" for their sophisticated and subdued side. Their diverse discography showcases this duality, with tracks like "Happiness", "Ice Cream Cake", and "Dumb Dumb" falling under the "Red" concept, while songs like "Be Natural", "Automatic", and "One of These Nights" aligning with the "Velvet" concept. Before their official debut, members Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, and Yeri were part of SM Rookies, SM Entertainment's pre-debut trainee team known as SR14G.
